G5:  Conditionals II - Progressive Verbs

by Tom Rohrbach

Multiple Choice Quiz

Any time we are talking about a continuous action, we use a continuous - or "progressive" - verb form.

In a conditional "if" clause, we use a real OR unreal progressive in this kind of situation, as needed.

Here are some examples:

REAL / PRESENT"  "If the teacher is talking, you should be taking notes."

UNREAL / PRESENT-FUTURE:  "If it weren't raining, we could go to the beach and get a tan."

UNREAL / PAST:  "If you had been writing all summer instead of relaxing, your new novel would be finished already."
