G3:  Verbs VII - Gerunds and Infinitives

by Tom Rohrbach

Multiple Choice Quiz

Some verbs in English can be followed by a gerund ("__ing"), some can be followed by an infinitive ("to..."), and some ("like", "love", "continue", and others) can be followed by either one.  Do you know the 'gerund and infinitive' verbs for Level 3?  Let's find out.  For each sentence, only one answer is correct.

THE 1-2 'RULE' for verbs followed by a gerund or infinitive

   RULE:    EXAMPLES:
    1-2    →    USE "to..."
If 1st verb happens 1st, and 2nd verb happens 2nd (later) → use "to..."     I prepared to take the TOEFL test.  [1st you prepare, and 2nd (later), you take  → "to take"]
    NOT 1-2    →    USE "_ing"
If 1st verb happens AT THE SAME TIME as 2nd verb → use "_ing"     Jane kept trying until she got it right.  [Keep and try happen at the same time  → "trying"]
If 1st verb happens AFTER 2nd verb → use "_ing"     Billy admitted breaking the window with his baseball.  [The 2nd verb action happens before the 1st verb → "breaking"]
EXCEPTIONS    Some Level 3 verbs DO NOT follow the rule  →     LEVEL 3 EXCEPTIONS: "used ... to do"   |   "consider ... doing"   |   "discuss ... doing"   |   "postpone ... doing"

NOTE:  This 'rule' works for about 80% of gerunds and infinitives after verbs.  You have to memorize the exceptions.
